Pitch Report
The scores haven’t reflected it in some of the games, but the deck here has still be flat. They did prepare a tacky pitch to combat SRH’s hitters, but KKR and CSK’s below par scores were more due to their batting deficiencies that anything to do with the pitch. RCB racked up 221 here and MI gave the chase a good go, and MI scored 215 in their one go batting first here this season, so competent batting line ups should make hay here.
- The average score batting first at the venue this season is 178.
- The average score chasing at the venue this season is 167.
- While the pacers have picked 75% of the wickets to have fallen at Wankhede this season, they have been a tad expensive with an economy of 9.6. The spinners have been more restrictive with an economy of 8.8.
- The chasing team has won 3 of the 5 matches at the venue this season. The captain who has won the toss has preferred to field first in all 5 encounters.
Gujarat to start slow
Sudharsan and Gill have been an incredible opening partnership this season, Gujarat’s first wicket is averaging over 60, 6 50+ stands in 10 games, both players high up in the orange cap rankings. They have a specific method to getting these runs, usually it’s fairly risk free stuff early on, they rotate the strike a lot (right-left hand combo helps mess up the bowlers rhythm and lines early) but they’re just looking for a solid start and to keep wickets intact. This is shown by their 1st over scores, only twice in 10 games have they scored 8 or more (if you look at RR they’ve managed it 8 times, PK 7 times so that’s the other end of the spectrum). With the ball MI have been tight up top, only conceding 8 or more twice in 11 games. That would suggest GT total runs, over 1 – under 7.5 (1.85, Unibet) is the logical play here. In the head-to-heads, Mumbai have scored more than their opponents in the 1st over 6 times (1 tie, 4 losses), Gujarat have only scored more twice (1 tie, 7 losses) so Mumbai most 1st over runs (2.1, Skybet) looks too big based on the trends.
Ryan a rick?
Rickleton has worked into the season after a up-and-down start, this is his first season in the IPL so it was to be expected that he’d not hit the ground running but he’s found his form now. Fifties in his last 2 games and 24 or more in 5 of the last 6 games. Siraj is less of a threat with the new ball than he was at the start of the season and Arshad is out the team also, so the 1st few overs vs GT are less threatening that at the minute (opening partnerships have surpassed their lines vs GT 4 of the last 5, after just 1 of the first 5) so Ryan Rickleton over 21.5 runs (1.85, Betvictor) looks a little low.
Tons of batting power
The wicket here is often flat, and late on in innings it often appears impossible to stem the flow of runs. These are 2 of the strongest top orders on show in the IPL, so A Hundred to be scored (7.00, Bet365) looks a good bet. We saw 2 games with centuries last year at the Wankhede, and a whopping 4/7 in 2023. Rickleton looks like he could push on to a big score, Rohit has IPL tons, SKY made centuries here in 23 and 24 and Jacks scored a ton whilst at RCB. Sai has an IPL ton and numerous more 50s, Gill has 4 since he moved up to opening the batting and Buttler has 7 IPL tons so we have the right pitch and the right personnel.
